Beyoncé Knowles Shares Her Beauty Secrets

She’s as famous for her ever-changing looks as she is for being a workaholic singer, actress, and all-around superstar. Here, some of her secrets to staying fierce

Are there similarities between music and perfume?
When I write songs, I want them to be sensual and sexy, so women can go out on the dance floor and feel free and strong—like they can say whatever they want to say, especially to the opposite sex. And that’s what I wanted Heat to do too. You feel more confident when you’re wearing a fragrance you love.

Any anti-fatigue beauty tricks?
I always keep a pair of Ray-Bans handy! And sometimes I put a little gold eye shadow in the inner corners of my eyes—it’s more subtle than white, but it still really makes you look more awake.

What do you use to give your body skin that velvety sheen?
I layer on bronzers for public appearances. I love L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze One Day gel, which you can just get at Walmart, and Scott Barnes Body Bling is also great.

You do your own makeup for performances. Why not use a makeup artist?
It’s a way of getting into the zone—it’s part of becoming Sasha Fierce. I’m able to sit down for an hour and play around with makeup, which I find really relaxing and fun. Before a tour, I have my makeup artist design a look for me—she draws it on paper to show me where to put everything.

How important is hair and makeup for getting into film roles?
Very. Especially playing Etta James in Cadillac Records—once I put on that blond wig and those thick eyebrows, I felt much more natural in her skin. That’s one of the things I love about makeup: You can change your whole attitude just by doing your eyeliner or lipstick differently.

What are some of your staple red-carpet tricks?
I use a makeup primer, and then I use a lot of powder to keep everything in place. I usually go for a waterproof mascara, or a strip of false lashes when I’m onstage, so I won’t get smudgy. And I love L’Oréal Paris Elnett hairspray—it holds like nothing else.

Your mom owned a hair salon when you were growing up. Did you try out a lot of styles?
Oh, yeah. I’m sure it was scary for her because I was always messing with my hair when I was a kid. One of the worst things I did was cut my ponytails off. I saw my mom doing extensions, so I thought she’d be able to put them back on. Thankfully I had separated my hair into quarters and I only cut off the front two ponytails. Afterward I had to have really thick bangs for a while.

Did it make you more fearless about experimenting as an adult?
Definitely. I’m still always doing something to my hair—cutting layers, or bleaching it, or taking it upon myself to copy fashionable hairstyles without knowing the necessary techniques. A couple of weeks ago, I cut my own bangs and put highlights in the front. When my stylist saw me, she was like, “What did you do?!” I did a pretty good job, but she still had to fix it. We’re always joking that I’m a frustrated hairdresser.

How often do you exercise?
I’ve never been all that consistent. If I’m onstage doing a performance for two and a half hours, I don’t really think I need to do anything else. So when I’m on tour, I let it slide. But I just started working out at the Tracy Anderson gym. It’s hard work!

Tracy Anderson is known for reshaping people’s bodies. Is that what you want?
Not really; I’m pretty happy. I want to get my arms a bit leaner, but other than that, it’s just maintenance.

Do you follow a specific diet?
Well, I don’t eat pasta every day. I’m not trying to lose or gain weight, but I do have to work out and watch what I eat. I’m not someone who can go crazy. I’ll usually have cereal for breakfast and a salad for lunch and a light dinner, and then on Sundays I’ll allow myself to have whatever I want.

You famously did the Master Cleanse for your role in Dreamgirls. Would you ever do it again?
Never. I did it to lose weight really fast, but it wasn’t fun. There are healthier ways to lose weight—I wouldn’t recommend it.

Taylor Lautner interview

Get to Know Taylor Lautner New Moon star Taylor Lautner tells us about his first kiss, his worst habit, and why he still gets shy around girls.

How old were you when you had your first kiss?

"It was sometime in junior high. I don't remember what year, but it was definitely in junior high. I think it was just with a random girl from school. I mean, it's not like I walked up to her and was like 'You're just a random girl and I'm going to kiss you,' but just a girl from school, and we had a little thing in junior high."

What's the girl fashion trend that confuses the heck out of you?

"I have one that sometimes I don't understand and sometimes I think is really cute: leg warmers. Sometimes it looks really awkward, like Why are you wearing those? and sometimes it's like, that's pretty cute. Maybe it's the girl or has something to do with wearing them on a sunny day. Like when it's California weather and it's 90 degrees, you don't need to be wearing them. Maybe that's the answer: The fashion trend I don't understand — leg warmers when it's 90 degrees out!"

What's the chick flick you secretly love?

"It's definitely girly: The Notebook. And A Walk to Remember."

What's your TV guilty pleasure?

"One thing I watch off the hook because it's on every single night up here [in Vancouver] and I usually can't find it in the States that much is Dog: The Bounty Hunter."

Who would play you in the movie version of your life?

"Everybody else always says Johnny Depp, but I wouldn't mind Brad Pitt or Matt Damon. When people ask me whose career I'd want to have, I say Matt Damon. I love the Bourne series."

If you could trade places with anyone in the world for one day, who would it be?

Brian Austin Green, because he gets to date Megan Fox!

Who in your family are you closest to?

"My sister because she looks up to me, but I also look up to her in a way. She's younger, she's only 10, so I'm probably going to be one of those brothers who are watching her with boys, which she's probably not going to like too much."

What's your favorite Web site?

"I'm not on the computer that much, but I used to go to this Web site called addictinggames.com. It has the coolest games and a lot of variety, so whenever I was bored, I would just go on that."

What's your worst habit?

"I bounce my knees, but I do not have restless leg syndrome. I did an interview, I don't even know who it was with, and they said I told them I have restless leg syndrome and it distracts me from my work. I do not have any syndrome. I actually have many friends [like me] who just bounce their knees."

Being that you have tons of screaming fans, is it easy for you to talk to girls?

"[Laughs] Oh, I definitely wouldn't say I overcame that. I guess it just depends on the girl. Sometimes I'll feel free to completely open up, and I wish I could do that more often because that's what I look for in a girl. Someone that can open up and be herself, but no, I definitely haven't overcome it completely."

What's the last song you listened to on your iPod?

"It was actually a techno song. I listen to them to get pumped up on set."

What's the last thing you bought?

"Last night's steak [dinner]."

What did you dream about last night?

"I don't remember. I never remember my dreams."

How much money is in your wallet right now?

"I don't have a wallet with me."

What's a relationship deal breaker for you?

"If a girl doesn't know how to smile or laugh or if they try to play cool all the time. Playing hard to get is not the way to win me over. I'm definitely more for the girl who can smile and laugh all the time and just have a good time!"

Do you play any instruments?

"I've always kind of had an interest in the drums but nothing else. The drums are the only thing I feel I would be good at, because I'm a very physical person. I've always played sports and stuff. Drums would give me something to do."

Fill in the blank: When I look back at 17, I'll remember...

"Being on the set filming New Moon or Eclipse, because both of them occur while I'm 17. And New Moon has definitely been a blast so far, with the whole cast and crew. That's definitely going to be it."

Get the Look: Kristen Stewart in Eclipse

RB: What was your inspiration for Bella's look in the film?

RM: We had to keep Bella's makeup natural but still make her stand out among all the other mythical creatures with their dramatic makeup. I've often described her look as "flawed yet flawless." She is a modern-day fairy-tale character, a heroine beloved by so many. Her look needed to be comparable to the flawlessness of a Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. Yes, she is a real human girl, and that is where the flawed part comes in, but if her look was too plain she wouldn't be able to hold her own next to these creatures, and the movie would be a little off-kilter.

RB: What are your tricks to getting a natural look like Bella's?

RM: I'd say the key to Bella's look is flawless skin, naturally enhanced eyes, pretty peachy-pink cheeks, and matching lips. Since Bella is naturally pale, the secret to keeping her from looking washed out is to warm it up a bit with the blush and the lips. Also, stay away from cool tones and use warmer ones instead. I used a combination of five different blushes to get Bella's look in the film. (Note: Mathews is keeping specific products on the hush since the series isn't over yet.)

RB: Do you have a favorite look for Bella in the films?

RM: I love how Bella looks in both New Moon and Eclipse. Kristen is such a naturally beautiful girl, but when we finish the Bella makeup and put the contacts in she looks completely different — it's astonishing. Chris Weitz (director of New Moon) said that it looked like Kristen as Bella had stepped out of a classic Renaissance painting, and I agree. We also had a lot of fun creating Bella's vampire look for New Moon. You only see a flash of it in the movie, but it was setting the design for what Bella will become in Breaking Dawn. Bella becomes the most badass vampire of them all, and I had a blast being able to depict on-screen what she would look like in the minds of the readers.

RB: What's your one superhero product you can't live without on or off set?

RM: I only get one?! That would have to be Clé de Peau Beauté Concealers.

Marion Cotillard VOGUE Magazine Cover July 2010

With a new film out this month, French siren and Oscar winner Marion Cotillard reveals to Joan Juliet Buck her passion for music and Modigliani—and her true bohemian spirit.

French siren Marion Cotillard is all sorts of perfection in Dior on the July 2010 cover of Vogue, as captured by celebrated photog Mario Testino. Here’s what the 34-year-old actress told contributing editor Joan Juliet Buck :

On playing in the Expressionist-Surrealist band Yodelice fronted by composer Mazim Nucci: “I play the bass guitar, keyboard, and tambourine—I’m their one-woman band and all-purpose maid,” Cotillard explains. She’s taken to appearing with Yodelice on tour, dressed as a man, under “Simone,” the name of her maternal grandmother. “It’s pretty refreshing to be in a situation where the spotlight is on someone else.”

On her Oscar winning portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose: When the film was over, she couldn’t shake Piaf. Her hairline and her eyebrows were still shaved. She fled with Canet to Peru and the Amazon; she went to Bora Bora with her best friend, Geraldine. “It was there that I found myself articulating why Piaf was still living inside me. She had been abandoned as a child; her greatest fear was to be alone. Now I didn’t want to abandon her. I finally was able to say, ‘She’s been dead for 40 years; it’s OK.’”

Her inspiration for her character in the musical Nine: She goes into every character as deeply: lived on the Menominee reservation for Billie Frechette, spent four months learning to dance for Luisa in Nine. Her inspirations for the cockolded director’s wife included Fellini’s wife, Giulietta Masina, and Eleanor Coppola’s documentary Hearts of Darkness, about the shooting of Apocalypse Now. Photos of Audrey Hepburn gave her “the hairdo with the big personality, the thick bangs and the ponytail. You paint your character with colors you have taken from everywhere.”

Megan Fox Interview Magazine July 2010

“In the past, I’ve been reluctant to share any bits of truth about myself or to really let people in on my reality. So I have said some things to throw people off the scent of what’s really going on in my life. So I have sort of aided the media in printing these misconceptions, which I regret.”

The leading bombshell of the Transformers franchise no longer, Megan Fox is never far from the box office. She next hits the big screen in Jonah Hex, opening June 18. The screen stunner has made plenty headlines for her often not-so-refreshingly honest remarks, and she using the film’s media promo tour to clear up some of the public’s misconception’s in a recent Q&A for Interview Magazine, conducted by fellow big screen star The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis.

Megan Fox’s Baby Plans: “I’d really like to have a family at some point,” says Megan, who is dating former 90210 star Brian Austin Green. “Not that I’m not focused on my career — of course I am. But I’m just at that place where I want to spend some time at home and on my family. And if a great project comes my way, then of course I’ll take it. But I’m not actively out seeking something specific.”

Megan On Being Misunderstood: “I’m one of those people who fiercely guards their privacy, so I hate doing interviews. Because just in terms of the experience I’ve had with the media so far, almost everything I say, no matter how innocent my intentions are, seems to get sort of manipulated and sensationalized and turned into some ridiculous news story,” says Megan, who insists her comments are often twisted by the media. “It just happens so much that I don’t want to open my mouth or speak anymore, because everything I say becomes scandalous. It wears you out. So I’m a bit jaded.”

Megan feels somewhat responsible for some of what’s gone on in the press.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to share any bits of truth about myself or to really let people in on my reality, so I have said some things to throw people off the scent of what’s really going on in my life,” she says. “So I have sort of aided the media in printing these misconceptions, which I regret. I’ve just come to the realization at this point that if I don’t feel like sharing, then I’m just not going to share. But I’m not going to go out of my way to mislead people or keep them at a distance, because that doesn’t really get me anywhere either.”

Ashley Greene Seventeen Mexico 2010

Translated article:

On working with donatemydress.org:
“I kept my prom dress for years until I joined the foundation and donated it. It’s amazing to see the girls’ eyes when you give ger a beautiful dress. It was because I got to interact with many of the girls afterwards, and I shared my experiences with them.

On her own prom:
“My prom was amazing! I bought my own outfit because my parents didn’t have the money for it. So I worked and saved the money for the dress, and I think that added some special value to it. I went with my High School boyfriend and had a great time. It was the fairy tale everyone talks about! It was a night I’ll remember forever”.

On her personal style.
“I wore a long golden dress with sequins. It had a pronounced cleavage, so mom told me ‘I know your dad and he will not let you leave the house like that!’. So she got me a pashmina to put over the dress”.

Her prom tips.
“Definitely plan ahead, because the ay of teh party you’ll be very nervous. Organizing before the big day helps a lot. When you pick your dress make sure it’s comfortable because you’ll be dancing in it all night. Be yourself and don’t try to copy other looks. Some girls worry so much about their hair and make up and end up overdoing it. Make sure you feel good with your choices, otherwise you’ll be thinking all night ‘Oh my God, what have I done?!”

The boyz talk about their proms:

Taylor: “I always saw these parties in movies and then all of a sudden I was on my own and thought, wow! I’m at my own prom! Mine was at a museum so it was great.”

Rob: (on filming the prom scene in Twilight) “It was amazing eventhough we did it at 2 am, and it was raining and freezing.”

Jackson: “Before my own prom I had worked at a DJ on 10 proms.”

Kellan: “Our theme was Casino. My friends and I gambled all night but I learned the lesson: girls don’t like that.”

January Jones July 2010 California Style Summer

Mad Men’s January Jones is thoroughly modern on the cover and inside C for California Style Magazine’s Summer 2010 issue. Photographed by Matthias Vriens-McGrath and styled by Elizabeth Stewart.

January shakes off her 1960’s Betty ‘Housewife’ Draper persona and talks about of all things swimming with sharks, being her own stylist and being Yves Saint Laurent’s Stefano Pilati’s muse!

Inside January insists the cast and crew of Mad Men are not getting complacent: “I think we collectively, as the cast, writers and creators, feel very lucky that it’s had so much success, but now more than ever, we have a reputation to uphold and a level of work we have to keep meeting, so there’s a lot of pressure on us,” Jones says

Her idea of a really good time is swimming with sharks. Literally. As part of her role as a spokeswoman for Oceana, she headed off to Belize to dive with endangered sharks: “There’s a certain adrenaline rush and there has to be a bit of fear that goes with it,” she says of swimming with the predatory fish. “There’s also a bit of excitement.”

One could say the same thing about working in Hollywood: “I still feel like I’m a fish out of water,” says Jones. “I don’t think you can allow yourself to feel comfortable because success can be taken away from you. You have to keep working like every day is your last.”

ELLE's July cover girl on her new look and her new man

On the album art for Rated R: “I wanted pictures that represented strength and fearlessness but still femininity—a strong woman who can be vulnerable. Every woman is made up of vulnerability and strength; no matter what race you are, no matter what you’ve been through in your life. Every woman has that strength that is undeniable, but we also have really big hearts. It’s just us.”

On her new beau: “I have a boyfriend. I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy. I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family.”

On turning her dream of popstardom into reality: “If I were in Barbados still, I would be dreaming about this. I asked for it, and I love it, so why am I complaining? My first day on tour, I remember saying ‘I’m so tired—this is so much.’ Then I thought, What the fuck? You asked for this—you prayed to God to tour like Madonna.”

On designers she admires: “It’s clear there are definitely fewer black women in the high-fashion industry. One of the things I respected most about Gucci was that they did a print campaign with me. I’m a black girl on a fashion spread for Gucci—that was a big deal. I respect designers who aren’t afraid to go outside the box. I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited. I thought, Okay, I can work that, for sure.”

On the past year: “A year ago, I was very confused. Because he was my best friend. All of a sudden, one night changed our whole lives—not only our friendship, but our lives. I wanted to wake up one day and just not have that pain anymore. I wanted to be with him again or get over him—it was either-or. I just didn’t want to feel the pain, the confusion.”

Cameron Diaz: Vogue UK Magazine July 2010

Cameron Diaz: Golden Girl on Vogue UK Magazine July 2010

Cameron Diaz graces the July 2010 cover of UK Vogue. The cover was shot by Regan Cameron. I like the colors of the cover and Cameron looks happy but they should have done something with the hair.

Cameron can currently be seen reprising her role as the voice of Princess Fiona in Shrek Forever. Cameron will next be seen in "Knight and Day" alongside Tom Cruise. Knight and Day is an action-comedy centered on a fugitive couple on a glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth vs. trust.

Photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott
Styled by Alex White

Eva Mendes releases her inner Bridget Bardot, for W magazine July 2010. I’m more amazed that we’re already at the time of year where July anything is being released. Seriously. Every day is Christmas in my head, and so I’m still in mid-January. I don’t really think I like real time just ticking by without my knowing. Anyhoo… Mendes is so stunning on the cover you’d best look at it with some shades on. You’ll be blinded by the beauty if you don’t take the appropriate measures to protect your eyes. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. She’s so purdy that I don’t even mind having to look up her nose, into her brain, on the cover itself.

On becoming a mother: “I’ve never had a longing to have children,” she says. “I’ve been thinking about it lately because it’s like, Oh, God, am I going to do this? I don’t know is the answer.”

On her Calvin Klein ads: “There I was,” she says, “all greased up, my head thrown back, and I thought, Who are you? Are you kidding me?” Later that day the curvy beauty, now ensconced in a banquette at the Carlyle hotel restaurant, laughs as she recounts how disconnected the sighting made her feel. “There’s that little surreal moment,” Mendes says. “I’m proud of it, absolutely, because why not? I can access that side quite easily, and I enjoy it, but certainly how boring if that was all I had to offer. The goal is to explore all sides.”

Nobody understands how funny she is: “It’s very hard for me to be seen as funny, and the truth is, that’s where I’m most comfortable,” she says when talk turns to her latest film, The Other Guys, which opens in August and also stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Mendes plays über woman Sheila Gamble, a Knicks dancer–turned–doctor married to a dunderhead of a forensics cop (Ferrell) who doesn’t realize what a babe his wife is. “These are the two comments I get from people when they meet me,” says Mendes, who lives in Los Angeles but is in New York for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala. “‘You seem a lot taller on film,’ and ‘You’re funny.’ If people hang out with me, they see I’m a ham.”

On her comedic turn in The Other Guys: “It was completely liberating,” she says of the opportunity to play in another key. “Never have I had so much fun with a character and felt so natural at it. Had I done this movie three years ago, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to throw it back at Will, and now, if anything, I was overly confident. I didn’t know when to stop!”

On nudity in a film: “I’ve never had a problem with nudity, but I don’t put it out there without a reason,” says Mendes. “I’m not an exhibitionist. But, honestly, for my art I’ll do anything, almost. I’ll go there.”

Eva is “incredibly calculated” about her career: “I know I walk a fine line between being a respected actor and being what they call a sex symbol,” she says. “It’s a hard one to walk if you want to be known as a real, credible actor. But I’ve never felt objectified. Nothing you see me do is an accident. I might act like it’s an accident, but the opposite is true. I’m incredibly calculated when it comes to my career.”
