Benetton Spring/Summer 2011

Light Age
A shirt and … you’re all set: this seems to be what United Colors of Benetton is saying. In fact the striped or plain-colour shirts are uniquely cool and light. If we then pair them with gabardine trousers – long or Bermudas – we’ll be ready for even the very hottest weekend in summer. Pale blue, white and green with a touch of grey are, as always, the most appropriate colours. Make sure everything has a slightly crumpled air to be sure you won’t risk looking too formal.

Military Gym
These guys seem fresh out of an army camp gym. The visual impact is immediate: cotton canvas for jackets/shirts mixes with the jersey of T-shirts and tracksuit trousers; khaki teams with mottled grey or green; shirt checks also appear on pocket and zip details. The result is a fully-fledged task force all set to fight ... those extra pounds.

Summer Colours
Freedom to mix colours in the season best suited to this activity. A rule-free mix ‘n’ match creating attractive colour schemes with unexpected results. Glossy and matte fabrics, contrasting lengths and volumes, different weights: any “misuse” is allowed as long as it generates a new image of summer vitality.

Sunday Brunch
A casual look for an increasingly popular social event. You can wear what you like, from a two-piece suit to a knitted cotton top with Bermuda shorts, as long as everything has a totally informal look. The palette includes shades of blue matched with touches of brighter tones like red and turquoise. The fit is often roomy, to comply as much as possible with the relaxed mood of this Sunday opportunity for meeting our friends.

Benetton Autumn/Winter 2010

Back Forward
A step back into the ’30s to borrow its atmospheres and reproduce them with a modern twist.

Outerwear fabrics have volume and are full-bodied as only wool can be. The jacket is still the main player, be it plain-coloured or with classic motifs. Leather jackets keep company in harmonious matches. Trousers follow the same path as jackets.
Knitwear and jersey articles in this theme round off a formal yet creative look. A small range of well-defined colours: grey, brown, periwinkle, dark blue and black.

No Rules
The mix ‘n’ match adventure seems eternal. It allows us to try unconventional schemes without feeling the consequential awkwardness. Corduroy and distressed gabardine, wool tartan and ultra-worn jeans are emblems of authentic casual wear. If we want to go a bit further, we could try a knitted wool cardigan over cotton fleece trousers, or a cotton three-button vest top under a padded, woven-cloth jacket and knitted wool trousers.

“Fool Colours”
We never renounce tradition. Strong colours belong to winter, too, especially when choosing a padded jacket, sweater or sports trousers. Consequently, materials follow the same theme: nylon padded with genuine goose down, wool yarn worked in jacquard patterns, heavy jersey trousers with a waist draw cord. Contrast is a distinguishing trait of this theme: colour contrast, of course; weights; right/reverse. There is no particular fit in this case, just a state of extreme relaxation.

“Denimotion”
In this case denim, now acknowledged as a fabric for many occasions, plays its original role. Garments made of “Genoa cloth”, especially blue jeans, are worn for leisure time. Washed-out, crumpled, dark, fitted, dirty: these are a few of its looks, which are teamed with check flannel shirts and modern waterproof cotton trench coats. Jersey cardigans with a warm handle are worn over T-shirts decorated with graphic motifs.

United Colors of Benetton: 2010 Spring/Summer Collection

Like the music compilation on your favorite CD, the United Colors of Benetton has prepared a collection of your favorite colors and styles for spring 2010.

As every song in your playlist describes memorable moments, feelings, and people, this spring collection narrates an album of stories in your most admired tunes!

The swank sounds of this menswear track are divided into 4 melodious lines of simple but snappy men’s fashion:

Jacko plays to the beats of the big metropolis, like New York, dressing you after a busy day of work in pullovers, t-shirts, and comfortable trousers—all in a slim fit!

Another Part of Me spotlights one part of you: your legs! Bermuda shorts are the soloist here, spanning a wide assortment of fabrics like denim and canvas.

Man in the Mirror harmonizes a single chorus, but from different angles. Windproof and tear-resistant, the lightweight garments add a sportier note to your look with themed graphics on tees, ad lib cuts for denim, and assorted embellishments for that right techno beat!

Finally, have you been a naughty star this year? If so, then Bad is your choice to give you the right balance between an “active” and “aggressive” look, as well as a wrinkled, worn appearance.
United Colors of Benetton—a family of stars that is dressing a new generation of stars!

Benetton's Star Desginer: Vincenzo Scognamiglio

Have you ever walked into a store and wondered who designed that awesome tee or cool sweater? Well, behind ever cool design, there is a cool designer! Therefore, I would like to introduce you to the man who stands behind every cool design at the United Colors of Benetton: Vincenzo Scognamiglio.

Vincenzo was born 1965 in a municipality of the province Naples, Italy, called Torre del Greco, which means ‘Tower of the Greek’. Situated between the famous ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Torre del Greco is an ancient city, which, at one time, was even settled by the Saracens. Later in history, Torre del Greco drew world attention for its coral diving and exquisite cameos.

Vincenzo, it is a tremendous privilege to interview you! Tell me, how did it all begin?
I lived in Torre del Greco up to the age of 18, when I decided to take a “huge step” and departed for New York City. I was a little more than a young boy, but my ideas were clear and, soon, everyone at home ceded to my determination.

What events in your early years contributed to you becoming a designer?
I always traveled a lot, from when I was 10 years old (naturally accompanied!), and this led me to be curious—in the most positive sense of the term. My father was a broker, and it was from him that I inherited the disposition of a traveler and a “discoverer”.

When did you really know that you wanted to become a designer?
Becoming a designer was something that I always carried within me. Fashion and music have, in fact, always been my biggest passions. When I arrived to New York, I interne with Ralph Lauren. These two beautiful years confirmed to me that the career of a designer was what I really wanted to do.

I read that you worked with several labels in Japan… Did this experience impact you in any way?
In Japan I learned rigor and the discipline—the fundamental elements for growth with respect to everything and everyone. Moreover, I learned how to manage creativity—another fundamental aspect for attaining good results. For the most part, it was an educative experience from which I still benefit!

What inspires you as a designer?
Many things influence me: the “street” above all things; but also art and cinema, for example. I read very much; every morning I flip through several newspapers, because I am convinced that an idea can be born even from a piece of news.

Besides fashion, what other interests do you have?
Like I said, my other huge passion is music. I own an IMMEASURABLE collection of music (but I also have an iPod filled to capacity). I particularly love jazz and rock; then I like the “great vocalists.” When possible, I try to go to the cinema or organize dinners with my friends—being with them recharges my batteries. I like to travel and, work permitting, I try to do it whenever possible (I travel often for work, but naturally it is not the same thing!)

What led you to Benetton?
The desire to challenge myself… Working for a company that distributes its collections in 120 countries of the world and offers a total look for every moment of the day, believe me, truly represents an unmatchable challenge. What’s more, I handle both the men’s collection and the women’s; therefore, I can define myself as a “complete” designer. I also believe that Benetton is an unordinary company, which makes you proud to belong to.

What specific impact have you had on the men’s look at Benetton?
My arrival to Benetton coincided with an explosion in men’s fashion around the world. First, the concept of a man looking in stores for in-style clothing was nonexistent and reserved only for women. Fortunately, it is no longer the case today; now Benetton has a network of stores dedicated exclusively to men.

What does “fast fashion” mean to you and Benetton?
When one thinks of “fashion fashion” today, one is thinking of a low-quality product. In this sense, we are not interested in “fast fashion.” For Benetton, it is important to be “fast” in the sense of planning and distribution; but this never happens by skimping on quality.

As designer, what do you expect from the casting campaign?
The casting of the Benetton campaigns has always been an element of strong identity for the brand. The multiethnic and “real” approach to models has in a way determined a style. With this project the casting develops online—arriving from bottom to top, from grassroots to fashion pages—but it is only technically a new operation; in fact, it is in line with Benetton history. We hope the users that vote for the 100 finalists of “It's My Time” will be as bold as Benetton has been over the years!

What is the biggest challenge of a designer today?
Staying in step with the times and with the rapid changes, which the world imposes on us today. It is important that one scrutinizes oneself, not becoming distracted, because the modern-day public is more demanding in terms of style and quality.

In your opinion, where is men’s fashion headed?
After years of excesses, men’s fashion is finally turning towards great practicality and simplicity, without forgetting—however—good taste for elegance. This is also my personal way of seeing men’s fashion: in other words, I like that men dress like men!

Thank you so much, Vincenzo, for your time! It is a wonderful pleasure to become better acquainted with you!

United Colors of Benetton: A Family of Stars

When invited to participate in the 2010 Spring All-Star issue of Uomo Moda, the United Colors of Benetton responded with an enthusiastic phone call about their most recent campaigns and collections. So, brimming with the excitement of their press office, I am pleased to introduce you to Benetton—a family of stars!

The Benetton Group was originally founded in 1965 by three brothers and one sister of the Benetton family, all of whom were born and raised in Treviso, Veneto, of northeastern Italy.

Born of a father who owned a bicycle shop, the four children grew up to establish prominent names in all walks of Italian life, including politics, commerce, society, and sports.

Currently headquarted in Treviso, several members of the subsequent generation have teamed up at times with the founders and wielded together a network of nearly 6,000 stores in 120 countries, producing 150 million garments a year!

Multi-national, multi-cultural, and multi-racial, Benetton advertises on the basis of tolerance, peace, and respect for diversity—hence, the slogan United Colors, which has become the company’s logo and trademark.

In addition to subverting stereotypes and taboos in the promotion of coexistence, Benetton campaigns for human rights and freedom of speech, as well as humanitarian aid.

Quality, style, and passion make up the strong Italian character that permeates Benetton’s brands: the casual United Colors of Benetton, the glamour-oriented Sisley, and the leisure wear brand Playlife.

Benetton—a family of stars for a new generation of stars!

Uomo Moda ‘10 Spring Edition—the All-Star Issue

Well it is that time of the year, again, to send the publisher all articles for the next issue of Uomo Moda—the 1st and only all menswear magazine in Egypt.

As managing editor of fashion, I am very excited to present you with a sneak preview of the Spring 2010 Edition.

While my articles here at Men’s Fashion by Francesco focus primarily on emerging designers and budding labels, Uomo Moda blends this emphasis with many household name brands.

So over the next few days, I will be bringing you articles on PUMA, Dolce & Gabbana, United Colors of Benetton, and the less-known brand Tween, as well as an exclusive interview with Benetton’s creative director and designer—Vincenzo Scognamiglio.

Since the Egyptian football team—the Pharaohs—recently won the Orange Africa Cup of Nations for a successive 3rd time and a total of 7 times, I have dedicated the entire issue to all stars, including you!

I hope you enjoy the reading!
