Paul Smith Spring/Summer 2011 ‘Cosmic Rock’

Paul Smith menswear for Spring Summer 2011, ‘Cosmic Rock’ is a detailed, directional collection that references the beginning of Paul’s design career in the late 60’s/early ‘70’s and the inspiration he felt during this brave new rock era, watching musicians Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix mix new clothes with vintage.

The elements that excited Paul most from this era; surreal galaxy prints, occult signs, batik, military costumes and vibrant cosmic inspired colours have been translated to create looks in new relaxed silhouettes using modern fabrics.

The silhouette contrasts oversize volume with skinny pieces, designed to be worn in a relaxed draping style; an upside down lapel tailored jacket paired with a shirt with tie collar and patchwork jeans, a cardigan style tailored jacket over a jersey teamed with military parachute trousers and a pleated sleeve tailored jacket contrasted with a slim trouser.

In contrast to previous summer collections of lighter fresher pastels, the colours palettes this season are rich and dark, with four groups dominating; purples, magentas, indigos and silvery tones.

See the entire collection here.

Paul Smith Autumn/Winter 2010

Paul Smith menswear for Autumn Winter 2010 is an elegant, detailed collection that references the modern bohemian gentlemen inspired by Venice and Warren Ellis from the band ‘Bad Seeds’.

The neat, short and refined pieces of the collection are contrasted with oversized shapes and sportswear detailing.

Double breasted overcoats, soft capes and full length parkas are combined with tapered pleated trousers to maintain the soft silhouette.

The colour palette is dark with five groups dominating; purple, red, teak, Prussian blue and aubergine.

Fabrics are sleek and opulent made from rare fibres; camel, Alpaca, mohair and Angora alongside cashmere and silk to achieve a relaxed, lightweight and draped shape.

Check out the entire collection here.

Paul Smith: the Man, the Designer

Paul Smith was born 1946 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. At the age of 16, he began working in a clothing warehouse, even though his true passion was cycling, which he had to abandon due to an accident the following year.

Through the acquaintance of new friends that he met while in hospital, Paul was drawn to the exciting world of fashion.

After having acquired some experience in retailing and training in tailoring, Paul showed his first menswear collection in Paris, in 1976.

Today, the Paul Smith label entails 12 collections, which project a balance of humor and mischief, supported by a long British tradition of the classics.

Menswear Runway Call-Outs: Spring/Summer 2011

While this summer has yet to wind down, next spring and summer still seem to be a far way off. Nevertheless, I can never pass up a good trend analysis!

The following synopsis of the Runway Call-Outs for spring/summer 2011 was prepared by Trendstop, showing the forward-looking guy what is on the horizon.

Runway Report Menswear:
The necessary contrast to the colorful exuberance of Jil Sander and Prada, designers update classic menswear pieces for Spring Summer 2011. Casual garments are rendered with a surprisingly smart twist, whilst the smart are reinvigorated in technical fabrications; aiding in the creation of a thoroughly contemporary wardrobe that is suitable for more than one purpose. Loose and slouchy silhouettes dominate, culminating in low-cut tanks and long-line tunic shirts that promote a dressed-down aesthetic, perfect for summertime dressing.

Pared Down Bomber
The Nineties staple comes with pared down detailing, a clean and functional minimalism ideal for the Spring to Summer transition. Explore the potential of technical performance fabrics, or add contrast zips and asymmetric fastenings, as exemplified by Raf Simons and Gaspard Yurkievich.

Officer Jacket Update
The influence of the military inspires a reworking of the office jacket. Nylon finishes promote a casual stance, or opt for a formal conceit with gold buttons and braiding, or a cutaway front, as seen at Burberry Prorsum. White and natural color palettes introduce a safari aesthetic.

Slash Neck Knit
Layer over formal shirting to the archetypal office wear, or wear under a blazer and waistcoat. Contrasting or coordinating color palettes place emphasis on the new knitwear shape.

Tunic Shirt
Menswear is imbued with a subtle womenswear twist, as designers borrow from ethnic inspired attire. Longline shirts and tunics are belted with simple ties and belts that reiterate an alternative summer cool.

Low Cut Tank
Promote an easy-wear, effortless summer style with slouchy vest tops. Scooped necks and low cut armholes create the required insouciance, manipulated and crumpled finishes strengthen the overall conceit.
Formal Bermuda Short
The casual Bermuda is updated for the season in smart cotton fabrications. A loose and roomy shape extends to just above the knee, and can we adapted for printed and plain finishes. Best worn with sandals.

Caramel Leather Man Bag
Luxe caramel tones are applied to leather holdalls, backpacks and satchels, enhancing the appeal of the ubiquitous man-bag. Enhancing a well-dressed, gentleman-like apparel, caramel leather is a summer staple for the style conscious man about town.

Basket Weave Lace Up
Reinvigorating the pastoral cliche, basket-weave details inspire a new take on the masculine lace-up shoe. Polished leathers create an air of distinct refinement, whilst straw like and cotton weaves update shabby chic for a new season.

Luxe Loafer
The humble loafer is elevated to a fashion must-have by numerous designers. Suede uppers are detailed with kiltie fringing at Les Hommes, the same feature appearing on leather loafers at Etro. Detailed embossing and silver additions further promote the luxe conceit.

WORLD—the New Line of Casual-Chic Shoes by Ferragamo

Acumen Fund will receive a percentage of the sales from the new line of bio-friendly shoes, which was presented at Milan Fashion Week.

The world of Salvatore Ferragamo—the aesthetic and stylistic vision and the sensitivity in promoting a distinct lifestyle that is harmonious, sustainable, respectful of the environment, and socially responsible—is summed up in Ferragamo WORLD.

The line inaugurates a partnership with the non-profit Acumen Fund, which engages in the fight against world poverty in Asia and Africa and to which Salvatore Ferragamo will contribute a percentage of the sales from Ferragamo WORLD.

Ferragamo WORLD, the new line of 2011 spring/summer shoes presented at Milan Fashion Week, is a merger between modernity and the values represented by the brand: a collection of shoes characterized by a casual, sophisticated, and functional mood that bears the Ferragamo tradition in a search for style and comfortable structures.

Ferragamo WORLD incarnates the environmental and social sensitivity that is ever expanding in the world today. It was conceived for an active and dynamic public that applies its attitude of social awareness in all aspects of its purchasing behavior, seeing Ferragamo shoes not only as an accessory of style and extreme quality but also as a product that is representative of its own coherent values.

“Italian City Casual” is the expression that synthesizes the spirit of Ferragamo WORLD: a casual product searching for the urban lifestyle, which is inspired by the Italian way of life that is traditionally evoked by the relaxation of open spaces; by long walks in the city; by the use of the bicycle as the means of sustainable urban transportation; by the care for detail; and by a comfortable, portable elegance.

Happy 100th to Ermenegildo Zegna!

Pressed, ironed, and no wrinkles—we all wish we could look like Zegna at 100!—Ermenegildo Zegna celebrates 100 years of history at the Museo della Triennale in Milan.

The festive event unfolded into 2 shows: the casual Z Zegna line and the relaxed but classic Ermenegildo Zegna label.

The year was 1910 and Ermenegildo, the last of 10 children, was just 18 years old when he took over his father’s little wool factory in Trivero.

Situated in the Province of Biella of the Piedmont Region, Trivero had played a vital role in history for the production of wool, owing to the purity of water.

The factory rose quickly to fame for high quality wool suits, outshining local contemporaries and surpassing British rivals.

Although Ermenegildo died in 1996 at the age of 74, his two sons Aldo and Angelo took the reins, opening numerous plants for production.

Angelo, his youngest son, remembers his father as “an ecologist long before the term even existed!"

DSQUARED² Spring/Summer 2010 Goes Live!

Last week I posted several articles on DSQUARED², an avantguarde label from Canada that has spread quickly around the world.

Meanwhile, a video of the DSQUARED² Spring/Summer 2010 collection has just gone live!

Inspired by the thriller film “American Gigolò,” the collection presents a sexy range of exquisite taste in men’s clothing.

Rather than allowing today’s gentleman to fall into a frumpy, degenerate state like the protagonist in the 1980 film, DSQUARED² redeems his honor and without an alibi!

DSQUARED²—the Beginnings

Canadian twin brothers from Willowdale Ontario, Dean and Dan Caten have operated in the international fashion business since 1984.

They moved to New York City on 1983 to attend the Parson’s School of Design and on 1991 came to Italy where, on 1994, after many collaborations with the most important fashion houses, they had their first men’s collection show, marking the first in a long succession of runway extravaganzas that were to capture the attention of journalists and buyers for their perfect combination of fashion, music and theater.

The intelligent mix of irreverent Canadian wit and refined Italian tailoring, together with attention to detail are the foundation of today’s DSQUARED philosophy, which has given life to a unique concept of alternative luxury.

Recently, DSQUARED² collections have conquered a wider audience and, owing to their natural stylistic maturity, have become more chic and sophisticated while maintaining those sexy and provocative traits so embedded in their creative roots.

This evolution is also due to the continuous international inspiration received by Dean and Dan, who, while dividing their life and work between Milan and London, create their collections in Italy: “Born in Canada, living in London, made in Italy”.

“Aseptic Chic” by DSQUARED²

Milan, June 10th 2010. The F/W 2010 DSQUARED2 advertising campaign is once again brought to life by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot’s impeccable shots.

Nudity observes and discloses the natural essence of fashion: the human body is the aseptic inspiration for the Caten twins.

The atmosphere is cold inside the modern anatomy lab, recalling a series of clinical experiments.

The models are imprisoned inside crystal cabins, similar to cooling cells that preserve and emphasize the importance of each look.

The aggressive and inexpressive woman is coloured almost monochromaticlaly, balanced by an alternating palette of black and white; opposition, however, is represented by slips, latex gloves and shocking red lips.

Ultra skinny leather dresses clothe the DSQUARED2 woman, as she is wearing shoes and high “spinal” heels. Cotton hockey shirts and dark jeans are worn by the DSQUARED2 man, though he sometimes experiments bare-chested.

He is strong and severe, but is still imprisoned: a concept that synergizes the F/W 2010 DSQUARED2 theme, and is one that hints at Damien Hirst’s art style.

DSQUARED2 eyewear also strictly follows Dean & Dan Caten’s concept, showing big, severe, rigid and geometric shapes.

Metal details and stylized squaring serve to emphasize their intensity.

Raf Simons Snake T-Shirt

I’m sure that many of us have heard the song before: “She said, ‘I don't like spiders and snakes…’”

But here is a snake that we are going to love—the Raf Simons Snake T-Shirt.

Instead of snakeskin, the tee is made of ultra-light translucent materials.
The item is from the Raf Simons 2010 spring/summer collection and available at Oki-Ni.

Born in 1968, Raf Simons is a Belgian designer who, after studying Industrial Design, began designing menswear clothing in 1995.

Influenced by youth culture, Raf Simons elegantly captures the male body as if progressing from a young boy to a mature man.

Good Griffe! What is a Griffe?!

The word griffe (pronounced grief) comes from the French word ‘claw’ and refers to household name brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and the like.

If someone Italy is all “decked out” in these well-known designer labels, we say that he is all “griffato!”

Personally I love almost all the griffes out there, and they do set the thermometer for menswear around the world!

In my new website, which is currently being programmed, I have dedicated a section to griffes to provide a complete picture on the worldwide menswear fashion scene.

HUGO BOSS: A Brand for Every Occasion!

As I have iterated in the past, Men’s Fashion by Francesco is dedicated largely to emerging designers and trends around the world.

Nevertheless, since the Egyptian magazine for which I write—Uomo Moda—showcases many well-known griffes, I have written an article for the Summer Edition on the multiple lines of HUGO BOSS:

Hugo Ferdinand Boss first set up workshop in 1923 as a masterful tailor in Metzingen, Germany. Since that time, HUGO BOSS has grown into a global network of 6,100 sales points in 110 countries.

Besides the core brand BOSS, menswear lines include BOSS Black, BOSS Selection, BOSS Orange, and BOSS Green, as well as by the HUGO brand.

While the premium BOSS brand provides style-minded men with tailored sophistication, the HUGO collection is designed for the more unconventional trendsetter who wants to dress with unrivaled confidence.

The main BOSS Black line provides the modern men with elegant classic looks that satisfy the demands for any formal business or evening attire.

BOSS Orange allows the leisurely man to relax in a vibrant palette of exciting colors, while the golf-inspired BOSS Green line elegantly closes the gap between sportswear and sports apparel.

Finally, the premium BOSS Selection line is the last word on tailoring at its best!

The picture gallery below features the 2010 spring/summer collection of BOSS Orange—casual wear for the urban lifestyle in the world’s most cosmopolitan capitals.

Relax This Summer with Bershka

One of my favorite pastimes back home in Italy was to visit Bershka—the local fashion-minded store that is owned by the Spanish company, Inditex (INdustria de DIseño TEXtil, which translates as Textile Design Industries, Inc.).

Founded and chaired by Spain’s wealthiest entrepreneur, Amancio Ortega Gaona, Inditex also owns Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull and Bear, Oysho, and Stradivarius.

Two years after Inditex had founded Bershka in 1998, the new trendy brand was already being sold in 100 locations.

Now, a dozen years later, Bershka has expanded into 600 stores in 42 countries.

Bershka’s team of designers is comprised of 50 professionals who propose over 4,000 products within its massive network of stores.

So, have a look at the 2010 spring/summer collection and relax this summer with Bershka!

The Jack Purcell Shoe—Badminton Anyone?

John Edward “Jack” Purcell (1903–1991) was a Canadian badminton player that shot to world fame in 1933, later designing an athletic shoe that still bears “Jack Purcell.”

Growing up with tennis and golf, Jack took Ontario by storm when he picked up a badminton racquet and shuttlecock in 1924.

Already in 1929 and 1930, Jack was crowned Canadian National Badminton Champion!

In 1935, Jack designed a badminton shoe out of canvas and rubber for B.P. Goodrich of Canada. Converse purchased the rights in the 1970’s.

What sets the Jack Purcell shoe apart from, say, Chuck Taylor All Stars is the smile across the front.

Never have the Jack Purcell sneakers been more popular than today—75 years later! Jack keeps on smiling!

United Colors of Benetton: 2010 Spring/Summer Collection

Like the music compilation on your favorite CD, the United Colors of Benetton has prepared a collection of your favorite colors and styles for spring 2010.

As every song in your playlist describes memorable moments, feelings, and people, this spring collection narrates an album of stories in your most admired tunes!

The swank sounds of this menswear track are divided into 4 melodious lines of simple but snappy men’s fashion:

Jacko plays to the beats of the big metropolis, like New York, dressing you after a busy day of work in pullovers, t-shirts, and comfortable trousers—all in a slim fit!

Another Part of Me spotlights one part of you: your legs! Bermuda shorts are the soloist here, spanning a wide assortment of fabrics like denim and canvas.

Man in the Mirror harmonizes a single chorus, but from different angles. Windproof and tear-resistant, the lightweight garments add a sportier note to your look with themed graphics on tees, ad lib cuts for denim, and assorted embellishments for that right techno beat!

Finally, have you been a naughty star this year? If so, then Bad is your choice to give you the right balance between an “active” and “aggressive” look, as well as a wrinkled, worn appearance.
United Colors of Benetton—a family of stars that is dressing a new generation of stars!

Benetton's Star Desginer: Vincenzo Scognamiglio

Have you ever walked into a store and wondered who designed that awesome tee or cool sweater? Well, behind ever cool design, there is a cool designer! Therefore, I would like to introduce you to the man who stands behind every cool design at the United Colors of Benetton: Vincenzo Scognamiglio.

Vincenzo was born 1965 in a municipality of the province Naples, Italy, called Torre del Greco, which means ‘Tower of the Greek’. Situated between the famous ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Torre del Greco is an ancient city, which, at one time, was even settled by the Saracens. Later in history, Torre del Greco drew world attention for its coral diving and exquisite cameos.

Vincenzo, it is a tremendous privilege to interview you! Tell me, how did it all begin?
I lived in Torre del Greco up to the age of 18, when I decided to take a “huge step” and departed for New York City. I was a little more than a young boy, but my ideas were clear and, soon, everyone at home ceded to my determination.

What events in your early years contributed to you becoming a designer?
I always traveled a lot, from when I was 10 years old (naturally accompanied!), and this led me to be curious—in the most positive sense of the term. My father was a broker, and it was from him that I inherited the disposition of a traveler and a “discoverer”.

When did you really know that you wanted to become a designer?
Becoming a designer was something that I always carried within me. Fashion and music have, in fact, always been my biggest passions. When I arrived to New York, I interne with Ralph Lauren. These two beautiful years confirmed to me that the career of a designer was what I really wanted to do.

I read that you worked with several labels in Japan… Did this experience impact you in any way?
In Japan I learned rigor and the discipline—the fundamental elements for growth with respect to everything and everyone. Moreover, I learned how to manage creativity—another fundamental aspect for attaining good results. For the most part, it was an educative experience from which I still benefit!

What inspires you as a designer?
Many things influence me: the “street” above all things; but also art and cinema, for example. I read very much; every morning I flip through several newspapers, because I am convinced that an idea can be born even from a piece of news.

Besides fashion, what other interests do you have?
Like I said, my other huge passion is music. I own an IMMEASURABLE collection of music (but I also have an iPod filled to capacity). I particularly love jazz and rock; then I like the “great vocalists.” When possible, I try to go to the cinema or organize dinners with my friends—being with them recharges my batteries. I like to travel and, work permitting, I try to do it whenever possible (I travel often for work, but naturally it is not the same thing!)

What led you to Benetton?
The desire to challenge myself… Working for a company that distributes its collections in 120 countries of the world and offers a total look for every moment of the day, believe me, truly represents an unmatchable challenge. What’s more, I handle both the men’s collection and the women’s; therefore, I can define myself as a “complete” designer. I also believe that Benetton is an unordinary company, which makes you proud to belong to.

What specific impact have you had on the men’s look at Benetton?
My arrival to Benetton coincided with an explosion in men’s fashion around the world. First, the concept of a man looking in stores for in-style clothing was nonexistent and reserved only for women. Fortunately, it is no longer the case today; now Benetton has a network of stores dedicated exclusively to men.

What does “fast fashion” mean to you and Benetton?
When one thinks of “fashion fashion” today, one is thinking of a low-quality product. In this sense, we are not interested in “fast fashion.” For Benetton, it is important to be “fast” in the sense of planning and distribution; but this never happens by skimping on quality.

As designer, what do you expect from the casting campaign?
The casting of the Benetton campaigns has always been an element of strong identity for the brand. The multiethnic and “real” approach to models has in a way determined a style. With this project the casting develops online—arriving from bottom to top, from grassroots to fashion pages—but it is only technically a new operation; in fact, it is in line with Benetton history. We hope the users that vote for the 100 finalists of “It's My Time” will be as bold as Benetton has been over the years!

What is the biggest challenge of a designer today?
Staying in step with the times and with the rapid changes, which the world imposes on us today. It is important that one scrutinizes oneself, not becoming distracted, because the modern-day public is more demanding in terms of style and quality.

In your opinion, where is men’s fashion headed?
After years of excesses, men’s fashion is finally turning towards great practicality and simplicity, without forgetting—however—good taste for elegance. This is also my personal way of seeing men’s fashion: in other words, I like that men dress like men!

Thank you so much, Vincenzo, for your time! It is a wonderful pleasure to become better acquainted with you!

United Colors of Benetton: A Family of Stars

When invited to participate in the 2010 Spring All-Star issue of Uomo Moda, the United Colors of Benetton responded with an enthusiastic phone call about their most recent campaigns and collections. So, brimming with the excitement of their press office, I am pleased to introduce you to Benetton—a family of stars!

The Benetton Group was originally founded in 1965 by three brothers and one sister of the Benetton family, all of whom were born and raised in Treviso, Veneto, of northeastern Italy.

Born of a father who owned a bicycle shop, the four children grew up to establish prominent names in all walks of Italian life, including politics, commerce, society, and sports.

Currently headquarted in Treviso, several members of the subsequent generation have teamed up at times with the founders and wielded together a network of nearly 6,000 stores in 120 countries, producing 150 million garments a year!

Multi-national, multi-cultural, and multi-racial, Benetton advertises on the basis of tolerance, peace, and respect for diversity—hence, the slogan United Colors, which has become the company’s logo and trademark.

In addition to subverting stereotypes and taboos in the promotion of coexistence, Benetton campaigns for human rights and freedom of speech, as well as humanitarian aid.

Quality, style, and passion make up the strong Italian character that permeates Benetton’s brands: the casual United Colors of Benetton, the glamour-oriented Sisley, and the leisure wear brand Playlife.

Dolce & Gabbana 2010 Spring Collection: “Extreme Beauty”

The 2010 spring collection of Dolce & Gabbana takes us on a voyage to the extreme beauty of Sicily—the largest island of the Mediterranean and a historical crossroads of cultures for millennia.

Sicily’s enticing allure lies not only in its mountainous landscapes and pristine beaches but also within its inhabitants, descendents of an exotic mixture.

Waves of cultures have washed upon the sandy shores of this sunny island from ancient times, spanning from the ancient Greeks and Romans to the French and Arabs, the latter of whom briefly ruled the island a thousand years ago!

This spring season, Dolce & Gabbana journeys to the Sicilian countryside to pay tribute to the classic beauty of Sicilian men in all their outward virility and inward ruggedness.

The manly collection pays particular homage to the voluptuousness of the sartorial suit, carefully sown with attention to the finest details, from the proportions of the lapel to the selection of fabrics.

The embroidery has been crowned star of the collection as it symbolizes our longing for beauty, which is fulfilled on every garment, from the jackets and trousers to the scarves and velvet slippers.

As you pursue personal perfection this spring season, Extreme Beauty will lift your eyes to the future so that you may uncover the meaning of timeless elegance.
